Paul Tuppeny 2022

Realised sculpture 1000cmH x 100cmW x 100cmD

Proposed for Wilderness Wood in Sussex, this sculpture operates as  a spatial representation of our temporal intuitions concerning trees. Several progressive age signifiers, height, girth and colour, are aligned to follow a single vertical vector, terminating at the top in the moment of felling. Embodying our innate knowledge of trees as growing organisms, the sculpture expresses the meaningful presence of the woodland setting, generating affect and an enhanced sense of ‘connection’; we apprehend  trees, not just as lumber with leaves, but as living things, and it is in this that a deeper aesthetic experience perhaps resides.

The subject tree was felled in March. the sculpture will be installed in July
