Doubtful Species Artefact 23 comprises a section of common wasp honeycomb upon which there are several aligned straight slug/snail trails. It is housed in an illuminated glazed case.

The Doubtful Species installation/project sought initially to investigate the human practice of self-presentation through the exhibition of a series of artefacts attributed to a fictitious co-descendant species of homo sapiens. The artefacts are sourced from nature and gently manipulated to encourage the viewer’s subconscious to seek pattern, meaning and perhaps even divine message. Further human interpretations of the doubtful species, taking the form of ‘historic’ paintings, propagate their legend but also lend the co-species a presence which the viewer can feel. The figures within the paintings are configured both to accuse and to lead. The paintings draw upon the work of George Caitlin and other ethnographic illustrators.
